Be Water Aware This Summer
As warmer weather arrives, residents are being encouraged to stay safe around open water and learn what to do in an emergency.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service is reminding residents to take care around rivers, lakes, canals and other open water this summer.
Many people are unaware that cold water can be dangerous, even on warm days. Entering cold water can trigger an involuntary gasp response, rapid breathing and panic, making it difficult to stay afloat.
National figures show that around half of accidental drownings involve people who never intended to enter the water.
If you see someone in trouble in the water, remember:
PHONE – Call 999 and ask for the appropriate emergency service.
FLOAT – Encourage the person to float on their back if they are able.
THROW – Throw rescue equipment if it is available nearby.
Do not enter the water yourself, as this can put both you and the casualty at risk.
Residents are also reminded that alcohol and water do not mix, and that extra care should be taken when visiting unfamiliar locations.
